Neck pain remains as a major cause of disabilty

Neck pain remains as a major cause of disabilty

Neck Pain is one of the most common problems seen at the Center for Regenerative Medicine

(PRWEB) May 19, 2012

Neck pain remains as a major cause of disabilty, according to Dr. A. J. Farshchian MD the medical director for the center for Regenerative medicine.

All the interconnected structures that give your neck its incredible range of motion are subject to the wear-and-tear damage of arthritis and the overextension injuries of whiplash. Neck pain may result from abnormalities in the soft tissues – the muscles, ligaments, and nerves – as well as in bones and joints of the spine. The most common causes of neck pain are soft tissue abnormalities due to injury or prolonged wear and tear. In rare cases, infection or tumors may cause neck pain. In some people, neck problems may be the source of pain in the upper back, shoulders or arms.

Degenerative diseases that cause neck pain include osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis usually occurs in older people as a result of wear of the joints between the bones in the neck. Rheumatoid arthritis can cause destruction of the joints of the neck. Both of these major types of arthritis can cause stiffness and pain.

Cervical disk degeneration also can cause neck pain. The disk acts as a shock absorber between the bones in the neck. In cervical disk degeneration (typically age 40 onwards), the normal gelatin-like center of the disk degenerates and the space between the vertebrae narrows. As the disk space narrows, added stress is applied to the joints of the spine causing further wear and degenerative disease.

The cervical disk may also protrude and cause pressure on the spinal cord or nerve roots when the rim of the disk weakens. This is known as a herniated cervical disk. Because the neck is so flexible and because it supports the head, it is extremely vulnerable to injury. Motor vehicle or diving accidents, contact sports, and falls may result in neck injury. The regular use of safety belts in motor vehicles can help to prevent or minimize injury. A “rear end” automobile collision may result in hyper extension, a backward motion of the neck beyond normal limits, or hyperflexion, a forward motion of the neck beyond normal limits. Most common injuries are to the soft tissues, i.e., muscles and ligaments. Severe injury with fracture or dislocation of the neck may damage the spinal cord and cause paralysis .

Much less common causes of neck pain include tumors, infections, or congenital abnormalities of the vertebrae. There is also the emotional part, I mean why would the pain get worse with stress and get better with less stress, this must be emphasized when treating patient with neck pain other wise the job is not done. Why the tingling of the fingers? this is because of nerve conduction and dermatomes. Dermatomes are located on the anterior body and the posterior body and are consecutive in the neck and torso regions. Development of the peripheral nervous system will produce a pattern of skin innervated by cutaneous neurons of a certain spinal or cranial nerves. These are called dermatomes and represent specific regions of nerve reception of sensory impulses. The pattern of the dermatome is of major clinical significance when a physician desires to treat a particular portion of the body. For instance the gentleman discussed in the above case having numbness in the index finger as well as his thumb (refer to the picture) may need to be treated specifically at the level of C6-C7.

The Center for Regenerative Medicine in Miami, Florida concentrates on helping arthritic and injured people to get back to a functional level of life and their activities using non-surgical techniques and Orthopedic medicine. The center’s expertise is in treatment of conditions of spine, knees , shoulders , and other cartilage damages. We have developed non-surgical and rehabilitation techniques focused on treatment and management of joint pain. Our team includes health professionals organized around a central theme.

Judge?s Ruling Could Speed Up Actos Lawsuits

Judge’s Ruling Could Speed Up Actos Lawsuits

Orlando, FL (PRWEB) May 18, 2012

The Actos Bladder Cancer Center is alerting those patients who were diagnosed with bladder cancer or heart disease after taking the diabetes drug Actos that a recent court order could expedite the legal process by which Actos lawsuits are handled.

Anyone who has suffered a side effect after taking Actos is encouraged to speak with a lawyer about their legal options.

The announcement comes as claims mount against Takeda Pharmaceuticals that its best selling diabetes drug may have contributed to thousands of patients developing bladder cancer. According to an article published in Bloomberg on March 13, 2012, the company could face as many as 10,000 lawsuits in the U.S.

Controversy with Actos began last June when the FDA warned that the drug may be associated with a higher risk of bladder cancer. CBS News reported on June 10, 2011 that Germany and France had banned Actos after a study indicated long-term use could increase bladder cancer occurrences by as much as 40%.

Last month, the Canadian Press also reported that Health Canada had issued a warning after a study there showed a greater than 40% increased risk of bladder cancer from Actos.

A federal Judicial Panel has since consolidated all Actos lawsuits to a special multi-district federal court in Louisiana. The case is known as In Re: Actos Products Liability Litigation, MDL 2299, U.S. District Court, Western District of Louisiana (Lafayette).

United States District Judge Rebecca Doherty, who is overseeing the litigation, recently signed a direct-filing order for any new claims. This will allow anyone filing an Actos lawsuit to do so directly to the MDL without first having to file a case in their local court and waiting for it to be transferred to the federal court.

The Actos Resource Center believes this will help expedite the litigation process for new victims and allow all of the lawsuits to reach trial or a resolution even quicker. However, since a multi-district litigation court differs from other legal venues, it is important that anyone wishing to pursue a claim do so with a lawyer qualified for this type of litigation.

The Actos Resource Center urges anyone diagnosed with bladder cancer after taking the drug who has legal questions to talk with an expert drug injury attorney. They work only with qualified Actos lawyers who are actively involved in this litigation and have handled thousands of cases.

For more information on the research, actos warnings, side effects and legal options relating to the drug Actos, or to speak with a lawyer, visit ActosLawsuitUpdate.com.

U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) ?Supplement 411.org? Initiative Helps Athletes Find Safer Nutritional Products

U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) “Supplement 411.org” Initiative Helps Athletes Find Safer Nutritional Products

Ann Arbor, Mich. (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

To help athletes steer clear of tainted and adulterated nutritional products, the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has launched a new “Supplement 411” initiative. NSF International, an independent organization that tests and certifies products for the dietary and nutritional supplement industry, fully supports USADA’s Supplement 411.org campaign to help athletes make educated decisions when it comes to choosing nutritional products.

NSF International is currently the only independent third party testing and certification organization to meet the stringent requirements of USADA’s Supplement 411 program, which requires Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) audits and toxicological reviews. As the developer of the only American national standard for dietary supplements (NSF/ANSI Standard 173), NSF International developed the NSF Dietary Supplement Certification and NSF Certified for Sport® programs to test and certify the safety and quality of dietary and sports nutrition products.

The NSF Dietary Supplement Certification program requires GMP audits of manufacturing facilities, as well as toxicology, label claim and contaminant reviews. The NSF Certified for Sport® program builds on this by also screening supplements for more than 165 banned substances and undeclared ingredients including stimulants, narcotics, steroids, diuretics, beta-2-agonists, masking agents and other substances, as well as unsafe levels of contaminants.

The NSF Certified for Sport® program is recognized by major sports organizations such as the NFL, MLB, and their player associations, PGA, LPGA and the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES) to help ensure the sports supplements their athletes use are free of athletic banned substances.

The NSF Certified for Sport® program is accredited by the American National Standards Institute and the Standards Council of Canada. The program also meets USADA’s criteria of maintaining multiple international accreditations including ISO Guide 65 (requirements for bodies operating product certification systems), ISO 17025 (requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories) and ISO 17020 (criteria for the operation of various types of bodies performing inspection).

“NSF International fully supports USADA’s initiative to eliminate adulterated dietary supplements and nutritional products in the marketplace, and we will continue to do our part by offering testing and certification solutions that safeguard athletes and consumers from taking such products,” said Ed Wyszumiala, NSF International’s General Manager of Dietary Supplement Certification Programs.

“To help athletes find supplements that have been screened and certified by NSF International, we recently developed an NSF Certified for Sport App that enables people to easily search NSF’s list of certified products from an iPhone (and iPad) or Android phone,” Wyszumiala added.

“The need for these programs is great. Multiple studies have shown that as many as 20-25 percent of the bodybuilding products sold over-the-counter in health food stores may be spiked with anabolic steroids and other substances banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). We must make it easier for athletes and consumers to find safe products,” Wyszumiala concluded.

Both the NSF Dietary Supplement Certification and NSF Certified for Sport® programs are part of NSF International’s Health Sciences Division, which offers certification, training, consulting, GMP and GLP (Good Laboratory Practices) testing, R&D and auditing for the pharmaceutical, dietary supplement and medical device industries.

Editor’s Note: Ed Wyszumiala, General Manager of NSF’s Dietary Supplement Certification Programs, is available for media interviews. Contact Greta Houlahan at 734-913-5723 or houlahan(at)nsf(dot)org if you’d like to set up an interview.

About NSF International: NSF International is an independent organization that writes standards and tests and certifies products for the food, water and consumer goods industries to minimize adverse health effects and protect the environment (nsf.org). Founded in 1944, NSF is committed to protecting human health and safety worldwide. NSF is a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Food and Water Safety and Indoor Environment.

NSF International’s Health Sciences Division includes NSF Pharmalytica, a GLP & GMP contract laboratory; NSF-DBA, which has more than 25 years of pharmaceutical, dietary supplement, and medical devices training expertise; NSF Reference Standards; and NSF Dietary Supplement Certification and NSF Certified for Sport® athletic banned substances screening. NSF’s Health Science Division operates globally throughout North America, Europe, Middle East, Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Additional NSF services include management systems registrations delivered through NSF International Strategic Registrations, Ltd. (NSF-ISR), organic certification through Quality Assurance International (QAI), food safety and quality programs through the NSF Food Safety Division, drinking water product certification through the NSF Water Division, sustainability services through NSF Sustainability, and NSF Education and Training programs.

Amerinet Strategic Alliance for Financial Efficiency (SAFE) Member Craneware Brings Dramatic Financial Turnaround to Critical Access Hospital

Amerinet Strategic Alliance for Financial Efficiency (SAFE) Member Craneware Brings Dramatic Financial Turnaround to Critical Access Hospital

St. Louis, MO (PRWEB) May 17, 2012

Amerinet, a leading national healthcare solutions organization and Craneware, the leader in automated revenue integrity solutions, announced Amerinet member Adams County Regional Medical Center (ACRMC), a 25-bed Critical Access Hospital (CAH) in the southern Ohio region, significantly improved financial performance, operational efficiency and compliance through the implementation of Craneware’s Chargemaster Toolkit – CAH®, Online Reference Toolkit® and Bill Analyzer software. As most of the healthcare industry continues to lose revenue, following more than five years of substantial revenue loss, in the first year of implementation ACRMC is now operating at a small profit on less revenue.

“The software has identified millions in financial performance improvement opportunities and has already significantly reduced errors. With Craneware’s help, we made a dramatic financial turnaround in time to help save our hospital as previously the hospital was losing an average of million a year,” said Scott D. Smith, chief financial officer, Adams County Regional Medical Center.

In order to achieve this dramatic financial improvement, ACRMC needed visibility into their processes to ensure they were receiving all earned reimbursement through proper pricing, charging and coding. Immediate access to current regulatory changes and competitive pricing data was a top priority.

An Amerinet member since 1987, ACRMC obtained Craneware’s solutions and services through Amerinet. Craneware is a partner in the Amerinet Strategic Alliance for Financial Efficiency (SAFE), a unique partnership of market-leading companies, spearheaded by Amerinet, providing best-of-class revenue cycle and financial performance improvement solutions that support healthcare facilities of all sizes.

To meet ACRMC’s needs, Craneware’s Chargemaster Toolkit – CAH, designed specifically for CAHs to establish and maintain a complete and accurate chargemaster, was packaged with a CAH version of Craneware’s Online Reference Toolkit, a software which provides instant access to financial and regulatory coding resources. The solution immediately identified .3 million in potential financial performance improvements at Adams County.

To improve visibility into its revenue cycle and save significant rework by improving charge capture accuracy for compliant claims, Adams County also implemented Craneware’s Bill Analyzer solution. Bill Analyzer identifies potentially missed charge items and prioritizes these issues to help address root causes of revenue leakage and prevent recurrence.

“Prior to implementing Chargemaster Toolkit and Bill Analyzer, we were losing an average of .5 million a year. Now we’re projecting a profit for the first time in five years, and Craneware’s technology, training and support helped get us there,” said CFO Scott D. Smith.

SAFE provides Amerinet members with a unique cost effective menu of best-in-class software, services and support focus on specific areas encompassing: scheduling, pre-registration, patient access and estimates, charge capture, coding, utilization, collection, accounts receivable management and remittance processing.

Leveraging a three-step process to optimize financial efficiency, SAFE offers aligned solutions to reduce costs, generate revenue and achieve financial health for member organizations. The partnership also addresses issues specifically related to financial efficiencies for alternate care sites.
